tran van thao is one of vietnam's foremost abstract painters, graduating from ho chi minh city university of fine arts in 1986. he was part of the historic group of 10 artists who helped establish abstraction as a legitimate genre in vietnamese contemporary art following the doi moi reforms. his work draws on american abstract expressionism while exploring color, line, and texture across oil, collage, and papier-mâché.
