practice

Nguyễn Thúy-Hằng (b. 1978, Ho Chi Minh City) is a Vietnamese artist and writer whose practice bridges literature and visual art. Her debut trilogy — Current Times, Good Sensations, and Reasonable Insanity — written during two years in the United States, was published in Hanoi in 2006 and became a cultural phenomenon.

Her paintings and sculptures echo the sentiments of her writing, while her fiction gives visual ideas cryptic new form through text. Drawing on life in post-war Vietnam and an education spanning the US and Vietnam, her work diverges from socialist realism to confront hidden societal taboos — deconstructing the psychology of different social groups through structures of fantasy and introspection.

Selected exhibitions: Land(e)scape, Galerie BAO, Paris (2023); Histoire d'un voyage, The Factory, HCMC (2017); The Third Kunming Art Biennale, China (2016); SHE, Ugly Duck Gallery, London (2016); The Warriors, Saigon Domaine (2015); The Walker, British Council & City Fine Arts Museum, HCMC (2013).
