Crossing a Shoreless Sea | Băng qua Trùng dương – Open Studio by Noah Spivak

English | Tiếng Việt

A. Farm warmly invites you to “Crossing a Shoreless Sea”, an open studio showcase by Noah Spivak opening next Thursday, 30 October 2025 from 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM.

A poignant exploration of grief mapped onto a complex landscape of industrial materials and cultural embroidery stitches, “Crossing a Shoreless Sea” grapples with how an emotional gap, as a result of distance and dislocation, transforms and delays the experience of loss.

Evolve, corrode, grow and decay — Spivak’s works engage in an alchemical dialogue with matters, which echoes the circles of loss and life, of grief and renewal. Working with the industrial, mass-produced and readily available materials found in markets in Saigon, he experiments with ideas of interweaving and the gestures of repetition. From exploring cross stitches—a traditional technique of Ukrainian embroidery—with soft threads on a metal panel, weaving together with aluminum coils on steel mesh, to growing crystals on cyanotype-printed fabric, his needle works re-imbues warmth, memory and tenderness through not only touch of hand but also touch of time. An ode to Ukrainian cultural lineage, Spivak’s body of works illustrates that each act of embroidery becomes more than technique; it is a gesture of connection across time and space. True to his belief that materials are not static, Spivak reveals that loss itself is not a fixed state but a shifting landscape to be navigated. “Crossing a Shoreless Sea” invites viewers to join Spivak on this ongoing meditation on distant absence, guided by the enduring compass of personal memory and art-making.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Noah Spivak studied at the Cooper Union School of Art, New York and received a Bachelor of Fine Art in photography from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver (2015). He soon after migrated to Melbourne, Australia where he has been an active exhibitor both nationally and internationally.

The artist’s compulsive urge to collect – objects, relationships, meaning – is used to navigate the small phenomena of the reality we inhabit; pulling inspiration not from what our senses have access to, but rather, their limitations and inaccuracies. Spivak’s current processes collaborate with the alchemical world, creating temporal artworks that express a deep adoration and understanding for the materials used. His fascination with the invisible and obsession for process-led experimentation culminate in a body of work that explores the sense of self and its relationship to the physical world.
