3năm Studio began in the summer of ‘22 as a collective based in SGN ~ HCM. While looking after borrowed homes in transition, we engage in co-living, gardening, and art-labouring. The name (3năm | 3years) refers to the durational nature of our operation, thus encouraging us to realise short-term projects. To list a few; we are custodians of an open library, we accommodate occasional exhibitions and screenings, as well as supporting creatives in their work. 

3năm included Đạt Vũ, Kai Nguyễn, Liên Phạm, Vanessa Drummond, and Thái Tuấn.

3năm Studio bắt đầu hoạt động vào mùa hè năm 2022 như một tập thể định cư ở Sài Gòn ~ TP. HCM. Trong lúc tạm trú và chăm sóc những ngôi nhà trong trạng thái xê dịch, chúng tôi sống tập thể, làm vườn, và lao động nghệ thuật. Tên gọi 3năm hướng tới bản chất thời lượng của tập thể, chính thế mà thúc đẩy chúng tôi thực hiện các dự án ngắn hạn. Để điểm danh một vài hoạt động; chúng tôi chăm sóc một thư viện mở, thi thoảng tạo điều kiện cho các buổi trưng bày và trình chiếu, cũng như hỗ trợ những người làm sáng tạo trong công việc của họ.

This catalogue was published to commemorate the exhibition “Imaging Rhizome｜Hình dung gốc rễ” at RABA in Tokyo (April 27 – May 7, 2023).

Taking a closer look at 15 dummy books and artworks by 16 photo artists from Vietnam, “Imaging Rhizome” explores fundamental human themes—family, living environments, relationships, identity. Each of the 15 chapters is dedicated to one single dummy book and examines its background, its shape and its goals in images as well as in extensive interviews with the respective artists.

Among them are artists like Le Xuan Phong, who attempts to use photography as a shield in order to capture the loss and boredom experienced at a relative’s funeral; Lien Pham, whose work reflects on the way living between Vietnam and the United States for six years has affected her character and her experience; and Mai Nguyen Anh, who draws on a wealth of memories and records to contrast his native’s complex history before the Vietnam War with the overwhelming narrative that overshadows the country since then.
