Open Studio by Baby Reni

English | Tiếng Việt

A. Farm invites you to Baby Reni’s Open Studio on Saturday, March 1 at 7PM. This event marks the conclusion of her month-long residency at A. Farm, during which she was moved by her experiences with hybrid identity in relation to cultural practice and production.

Operating as Baby Reni, Irene Ha (b. 1997) has reflected on the act, and consequences, of naming and being named — from her legal name on government-issued documents to that given by Buddhist monks (Diệu Ngôn, meaning “well-spoken,” presumably chosen to subsume excessive chattiness into mindful expression). Through this lens, she continues to question the conventional notions of artistic value by reclaiming decorative themes historically dismissed as feminine and/or diasporic. In this presentation of new sculptural and painterly works — the latter inspired by Nguyễn Sáng’s reunification watercolors of the 1960s — Ha engages with ideas of home, friendship, work, and care.

The event will feature a live DJ set by C3lina and Yoong.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Irene Ha is a Vietnamese-Dutch artist whose practice approaches fashion from an artistic standpoint, simultaneously deconstructing its conventions whilst expanding its possibilities. Her work frequently explores her Southeast Asian heritage in relation to youth and pop culture, weaving together kaleidoscopic assemblages, installations, and performances. By gathering and recontextualizing everyday diasporic objects, trinkets, and interiors, she celebrates the layered hybridity of diasporic Southeast Asian pop culture. Baby Reni serves as a strategic embrace of “cuteness” as an aesthetic category—one where power is embedded in unthreatening appearances.
