Performance, Presentation & Discussion

A. Farm welcomes you to “Performance, Presentation & Discussion,” featuring resident artist and writer Ru Marshall and choreographer Lyon Nguyen. This event is part of Ru’s ongoing project-in-progress, Interlope.

Inspired in part by Argentine philosopher and dancer Marie Bardet’s The Cultivation of Gestures, Interlope investigates the meaning of gesture in visual arts and dance. It is also an exploration of the ways in which movement—quotidian and artistic—is informed by our relationship to nature—in particular, trees. There will be a brief performance by Lyon Nguyen and a presentation of Ru Marshall’s drawings (based in part on their collaboration with Nguyen), followed by a discussion between the two artists.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Lyon Nguyen is a movement and visual artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. He teaches Contact Improv, Contemporary Modern Dance, Adult Ballet, and Creative Process classes throughout Ho Chi Minh City. His choreographic works, such as Surf on Tides, Will the Sheep Come to be Cleaned, and The Ballad of Emotional Incompetence employ collage to heighten the somatic experience of complex identity. He is the founder of “nhận thấy chuyển động” (“perceiving movement”) — a series that aims to engage the Vietnamese creative community with dance through the lens of academic inquiry.

Ru Marshall is a writer and visual artist based in New York City. They are the author of A Separate Reality and the forthcoming American Trickster: The Hidden Worlds of Carlos Castaneda. They have exhibited their work at venues such as Participant Inc., Art in General, and White Columns. Their visual work is represented by the Jennifer Baahng Gallery.
